Reporting on Growth and Open Space Program
The Reporting on Growth and Open Space Program was established in 2006 at the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as a three-year program to provide journalists in the greater Charlotte Bi-State Region with actionable resources for news coverage and editorial writing on local and regional issues related to open space, growth and development.
In the Program’s first two years, seminars, webcast panel discussions, and an on-line Resource Manual have provided background information, story ideas, and useful contacts for journalists in the region, on topics as varied as the changing nature of environmental journalism, results from a region-wide survey of public opinion on growth and open space issues, land use regulation and private property rights, and locally-grown foods as part of the emerging open space economy.
